What we are learning in March!

In Reading we are focusing on non-fiction text structure. Students will be able to identify the structure the author used and compare it to other structures. They will do this by using signal words and graphic organizers to help them understand the text.

In Writing we will be writing opinion essays on who should be the next president. Students will collect information about each candidate and use that information to argue why their choice is the best choice for president. We will also be writing informative paragraphs with different text structures based on science topics.

In Math we will continue to work with multiplication of fractions and dividing whole numbers and unit fractions.

In Science we will explore light and astronomy.

In Social Studies we will learn about Westward Expansion and changes in transportation and technology during that period of American history.

What we are learning in February!

In Reading and Writing our main focus will be poetry. We will review elements of figurative language, and the structure of poems. We will apply what we have already learned about narrative and non-fiction texts such as plot structure and main idea to poems. Then we will write poems using all the elements we've learned.

In Math we will multiply fractions using models. This will be extended to multiplying mixed numbers and applying the knowledge to solve multi-step word problems,

In Science we will explore light and astronomy.

In Social Studies we will learn about Westward Expansion and changes in transportation and technology during that period of American history.

What we learned in December!

In Reading we focused on themes in fiction texts. Students identified themes, and supported the the themes with evidence from the text.

In Math we began working on addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators. We used area models, pattern blocks, number lines, and other strategies to find equivalent fractions in order to add or subtract fractions.

In Writing we began writing personal essays about topics that students feel strongly about. We used many different strategies to brainstorm good topics and details to write about.

In Science we will continued to explore electricity and electric circuits, as well as magnetism.

In Social Studies we continued to learn about the development of the government of the United States. We learned about the three branches of government and their roles and purpose in the United States.

In Math we will working with multi-digit division with two digit divisors. We will be using many strategies to help solve these problems, including partial quotient and area models.

In Writing we will be integrating information from multiple sources to write an opinion essay. We will focus on two main topics, "should students be allowed to bring lunch from home?" and "should there be zoos?"

In Science we will begin to explore electricity, including static electricity and circuits.
